I’m a park ranger in Yosemite. I work on the park’s website, educate and inspire the park’s visitors, and chase the park’s bears.
Before all that happened, I grew up in LA and liked being in LA. Then, I visited Yosemite on a Yosemite Institute trip and learned to love Yosemite (and dislike LA). Meanwhile, my interest in landforms piqued by my Yosemite trip, I studied at Cal State Northridge, earning a BS in geology (minor in geography) and was just a thesis short of an MA in geography when I got a year-round job at Yosemite.
These days, I work too hard trying to juggle the main part of my job (website and other publications) with the part I’m most passionate about–bears. I love the variety, though, and wouldn’t willingly give up one half of the job for the other.
(As if it needs to be said, the views expressed in this blog don’t necessarily reflect those of the National Park Service.)

Great site! My family loves Yosemite, we’re camping twice this year.
Would you be able to add an RSS feed? I’d like to know when you’ve got new posts up.

Hi Jeffrey,
I am so pleased to have found your website. I’m not sure if you remember me but I do remember you. We met in SMC and your passion then was Yosimite. I’m not surprise that you are working there now. I’m living in Santa Cruz and visit Yosemite often. Hope all is well with you. Vinh

I love your blog. Bears are fascinating, I love reading your stories about them. Many of the visitor contacts rangers make regarding bears and food storage must be incredibly frustrating. I admire the energy and positive attitude you guys bring to such an uphill battle.

I just spent an hour on your blog and read every post. It was time well spent! Now, when I visit Yosemite next week (wearing my nature photographer hat), I’ll know how to best handle any bear I might happen to meet. Thanks so much for your time in writing these posts! As a final note, I don’t subscribe to blogs via RSS but it would be super cool if you added an e-mail subscription plugin!

Jeffrey, our family and several others are camping in Upper Pines Friday through Tuesday. If you have some time to stop by and say hello, we’d all very much like to meet you.
We’ll be in #89.
